I love the paths on the Sunshine Coast. They are full of promise and adventure. I wanted to do a painting that would be so inviting that it would make you want to come into it.

I wanted to capture that feeling of a deserted beach. That sense of the gritty sand beneath your feet. To capture that feeling I think I put more sand into this painting than paint.

I love the framing of this scene. The cabin is nestled on an small island between smuggler park and Thornmanby Island. There are very few unobstructed views of the cabin, so I wanted to capture that natural framing of the cabin by the trees on the island, the water, and the huge tree in the foreground. The cabin seems so insignificant compared to all the nature around it.

I wanted to tackle the island in a large painting. Looking at it from my studio the island is framed by the rocks and the tree in the foreground. I wanted to capture that framing as much as capture the majesty of the island.

This storm saw plunging breakers crashing into the rocks, sending plume of water some 20 feet in the air. I wanted to capture the anger of the ocean, the power of the waves all while the sun was beginning to emerge.

This view feels like it changes 20 times a day. The rock on the point is always big and imposing. The stairs and the dock always seem so insignificant, and the cabins along Redrooff’s feel like dots on the sand between the ocean and the forest. What makes it feel so different is the light. These two paintings try to capture some those differences.

I paint this island often. I feel like I have been staring at it since I was 12. In a weird way it is the only thing in my life that hasn’t changed. And yet with different light, different weather, and different seasons it changes dramatically.
